Why Your Website Is Losing Customers (And How to Fix It)
5 common website mistakes that silently drive away potential customers and exactly what to do about each one.

Most small business owners know their website isn't doing enough. But they assume the problem is just "not enough traffic." The real issue is usually much simpler and much cheaper to fix.
Here are five mistakes I see on almost every website I audit.
1. Your homepage doesn't answer the basic question fast enough
When someone lands on your website, they're asking one question: "Is this for me?"
If they can't answer that question within 5 seconds, they're gone.
The fix is brutally simple: your headline should say exactly what you do, who you do it for and what happens next. Not something clever. Not your company tagline. Just the facts.
Bad: "Empowering businesses through digital solutions."
Good: "We build websites for Lagos-based restaurants that get more reservations from Google."
2. Your site is too slow
Google has published the data: pages that take longer than 3 seconds to load lose roughly 40% of visitors before they even see a single word.
Most slow sites have the same problems:
- Images that aren't compressed or resized
- Too many plugins (a WordPress site with 40+ plugins will crawl)
- No caching
- Shared hosting that can't handle real traffic
Run your site through PageSpeed Insights. If you score below 70 on mobile, you're losing customers every day.
3. There's no clear next step
I look at hundreds of websites every year. The most common mistake is the same every time: there's nothing to click.
Or worse, there are five things to click and none of them feel urgent.
Every page on your website should have one primary call to action. One thing you want the visitor to do next. Whether that's booking a call, sending a WhatsApp message or adding something to a cart, make it obvious, make it prominent and make it easy.
4. Your site doesn't work on mobile
Over 70% of web traffic in Nigeria comes from mobile devices. If your website is still designed for a desktop screen, you're designing for 30% of your audience and ignoring the other 70%.
Open your site on your phone right now. Is the text readable without zooming? Are the buttons large enough to tap? Does the menu work? Can you find the contact information?
If the answer to any of those is no, this is costing you money.
5. Google can't find you
A beautiful website that nobody can find is a very expensive business card.
Basic SEO isn't magic, it's just making sure Google can read your site correctly. This means:
- A clear page title that includes your main keyword
- A meta description that explains what the page is about
- Fast loading speed (back to point 2)
- Your business name, location and services mentioned naturally throughout the content
- A Google Business Profile that's fully filled out
If you're a plumber in Ikeja, your homepage should probably contain the words "plumber" and "Ikeja" more than once.
Where to start
If your website has all five of these problems, don't try to fix them all at once. Pick the one that's costing you the most and start there.
Usually that's speed or the mobile experience because both affect everyone who visits.
If you're not sure where to start, I offer a free 30-minute website audit on my discovery call. We'll look at your site together, identify the biggest problems and make a plan.
