Do You Actually Need a Custom Website? An Honest Answer
Custom websites are not always the right answer. Here is how to figure out what your business actually needs right now and when to upgrade later.

I build custom websites for a living. So it might surprise you to hear me say: you do not always need one.
The right website for your business depends on where you are right now, not where you hope to be in three years. Here is an honest guide to figuring out what you actually need.
When a template-based site is the right answer
If any of the following are true, a template-based site on Squarespace, Wix or a WordPress theme will serve you well:
You are just starting out. Your priority right now is getting visible and getting clients, not having the most technically impressive website in your industry. A clean, fast Squarespace site can do that job perfectly well for 12 to 24 months.
Your needs are straightforward. If your website needs to say what you do, show some examples of your work and give people a way to contact you, a template does that without any custom development needed.
Your budget is limited. A well-configured template site costs significantly less than a fully custom build. That difference in budget might be better spent on marketing, product development or simply keeping the business running while you grow.
You want to update it yourself. Template platforms are built for non-technical users. If you want to add a new service, change a price or upload a blog post without calling a developer every time, templates make that easy.
When a custom website makes sense
Your business has outgrown your current site. You are getting traffic but the site cannot handle what visitors need from it. Checkout is clunky. The booking flow is broken. The design no longer reflects where the business is.
You need functionality that templates cannot provide. Custom pricing calculators, complex booking systems, integrations with your internal tools, a customer portal, a marketplace. If your business model requires something unusual, you need something built for it.
Speed and SEO are core to your strategy. Template platforms are convenient but they carry overhead. A custom-built Next.js site will load faster, rank better and scale more cleanly than any template platform at equivalent traffic levels.
Your brand needs to stand out. In competitive markets, looking exactly like every other Squarespace site in your industry has a cost. A custom design is one of the clearest signals that a business takes itself seriously.
The honest middle ground
There is a third option that many businesses do not consider: a semi-custom site. This means taking a high-quality, well-built template and customising it significantly to match your brand, your content and your needs.
This costs less than a fully custom build, launches faster and looks far better than a default template. For a lot of businesses at the growth stage, it is the smartest option.
My actual recommendation
If you are making less than 5 million naira a year from your business, start with something clean and affordable that gets you visible. Invest in content, in marketing, in the actual product or service.
When you are consistently turning away work or your current site is clearly holding back growth, that is when you invest in a custom build.
I have helped clients at both stages. Some needed a full custom site from day one. Others needed someone to honestly tell them to spend their money elsewhere for now.
